A kilometer-sized testing site of Solar road was inaugurated in the French village of Tourouvre in Normandy by the ecology minister, Ségolène Royal, France. The road is covered with 2,800 sq m of electricity-generating panels.

It cost €5m (£4.2m) to construct and will be used by about 2,000 motorists a day during a two-year test period to establish if it can generate enough energy to power street lighting in the village.

The 2,800 square meters of solar panels are expected to generate 280 kilowatts at peak, with the installation generating enough energy to power all the public lighting in a town of 5,000 for a year, according to the company.
