The role of Parents is very important in the education of a child. The attitude, values and behaviour affect the child positively or negatively. It is necessary for the parents to understand that they play a vital role in the success of their child. When they are positively engaged in the child’s education, the child is more likely to attend and perform better at school.
An effective parental involvement or engagement is much more than just participating in the school meetings or helping them with their homework, but it is actively engaging with your child’s learning, both at home and at school. Parents have great influence on their children’s education for several reasons, but most importantly because they are their children’s first teachers. They engage the better it is for the child’s future.
i. Positive parent engagement leads to;
ii. Better outcomes in studies.
iii. Increased engagement with school work
iv. Regular attendance in school
v. Better behaviour.
vi. Increased social skills.
So here are some tips on how you can help your child do well at school.
Stay informed – We know that you are busy and short of time. But it is very important that you are aware of what is going on in the school life of the student. Ask your child what happened at his/her school, are they able to understand what is taught or are they having any problem in the school? Talk regularly about school and the value of learning.
Realistic expectations – Not every child is good at everything. Have high yet achievable expectations of your child. Do not push them to achieve what is impossible. Figure out what your child is good at and help them with the subjects which they are weak in.
Motivation – Scolding the child or yelling at them for getting bad grades is the last thing you should do. Instead, sit down and ask them about their problem areas and motivate them to work hard. Encourage positive attitudes.
Behaviour – No we aren’t talking about the behaviour of your child but your model behaviour. Have the personality you would like to see in your child because you are the first role model for your child.
Other than these you can also try the following tips:
Study time – Take out a little time from your busy schedule and sit down to study with your child. Read out loud with your child and listen to your child read out loud. Talk and ask about what they are learning. Explain things to them in a simple language.
Study habits – Help them to develop strong study habits. Help them to make a routine with ample amount of breaks in between. Reward them when they achieve something. Make sure that they are regular to school and study at home. Remember to give your child time to play too.
Techno-savvy – Make the internet your saviour. There are numerous sites which provide study material, solutions for the textbooks etc. You can use these resources to make assignments for your child and even help them with the answers. You can find ncert books solutions for class 8 on these online portals. So whether it is class 8 or 10 or 12, you can find the study material for all the classes online.
