Ramanathaswamy Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to god Shiva located on Rameswaram island in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.
The temple and the island of Rameswaram have acquired this name because of the legend, that this was the first place where Lord Rama had set foot after returning from Lanka after killing Ravana.
To absolve the sin of killing a brahmin, Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva here, where a temple was built later.
The temple has the longest corridor among all Hindu temples in India
It has two Lingams as the primary deity inside the sanctum. Legend has it that since there was no lingam when Rama wanted to worship, Hanuman was sent to get one from the Himalayas. By the time he came, Sita made one from sand. Till date the rituals followed are the Vishwalingam (one brought by Hanuman) is worshipped first and then the one from sand, Ramalingam. This was as per Lord Rama's decision.
