Sustainable development is that process which fulfils the needs of present generation, without causing any harm to the ability of the future generation to meet their own needs. It requires preservation of stock of resources including exhaustable natural resources and environmental resources.
Recent studies suggest us that groundwater in India is under serious threat because of its overuse. Nearly one-third of the country is overusing its groundwater reserves. Similarly, in case of rainwater if we use more than what is being replenished by rain then we would be overusing this resource.
Another area is exhausation of natural resources. The resources of crude oil would last only for 43 years more. This is for the world as a whole. The question of sustainability of development raises many fundamentally new issues about the nature and process of development.
