The air where Taj Mahal (in Agra) is located, contains very high levels of sulphur and nitrogen oxides. The resulting acid rain reacts with marble (CaCO₃)of Taj Mahal.

As a result, the wonderful monument is being slowly eaten away and the marble is getting discoloured and lustreless.
