If 8% VAT is included in the prices, find the original price of a shampoo bottle bought for Rs 180.

Let original price = x

∴     Price including VAT = Rs x + 8% of x

= Rsspace space open square brackets 1 plus 8 over 100 close square brackets straight x space equals space Rs space 108 over 100 straight x

But the original price + VAT = Rs 180

∴                   108 over 100 straight x equals Rs space 180

or                             x = Rs 180 cross times 100 over 108

                                  = Rs 500 over 3 equals space Rs space 166 2 over 3

Thus, the original price =    Rsspace space space 166 2 over 3
