Rate of Change of Velocity

Acceleration: Acceleration is seen in non-uniform motion and it can be defined as the rate of change of velocity with time.

Acceleration space equals space fraction numerator Change space in space velocity over denominator Time end fraction
straight a equals space fraction numerator straight v minus straight u over denominator straight t end fraction

where, v = final velocity, u = initial velocity

If v > u, then ‘a’ will be positive (+ve).

Retardation/ Deaceleration: Deceleration is seen in non-uniform motion during a decrease in velocity with time. It has the same definition as acceleration.

Deaceleration space equals space fraction numerator change space in space velocity over denominator change space in space time end fraction
straight a apostrophe space equals space fraction numerator straight v minus straight u over denominator straight t end fraction

Here v < u, ‘a’ = negative (-ve).
