Acceleration

  1. The rate of change in velocity with time known as acceleration.
  2. It is a vector quantity.
  3. Dimension formula of acceleration: [M0L1T-2]
  4. S.I unit of acceleration: ms-2
  5. Uniform acceleration: A particle is said to have uniform acceleration if magnitude and direction of the acceleration remain constant during particle motion.

    Non- uniform acceleration: A particle is said to have non-uniform acceleration, if magnitude or direction or both, change during motion.

    Average acceleration: It is the average change of velocity per unit time.

     aav = νt = v2 -ν1t2-t1

    where v2 and v1 are the instantaneous velocities or simply velocities at time t2 and t1.

    Instantaneous acceleration: It is defined as,

    a = limt0vt = dvdt

    Position-time graph for motion
    (a) positive acceleration
    (b) negative acceleration
    (c) zero acceleration
