The roles of women were specified in the anti-imperialist movement in Vietnam, and what that tells us about nationalist ideology.

Heroes of Past Times

  1. Trung Sisters: Trung sisters who had fought against Chinese domination in 39-43 CE became idols and got glorified.
  2. Trieu Au: Being an orphan, she lived with her brother, after growing up she left home, went into jungles and organised a large army and resisted Chinese rule.

Women as Rebels

  1. Women in Vietnam traditionally enjoyed greater equality than in China, particularly among the lower classes.
  2. Women played no role in public life of the Vietnamese, but the freedom struggle led to an emerging new image of womanhood.

Women as Warriors

  1. In the 1960s, women were depicted as young, brave and dedicated. They were shown as warriors and workers.
  2. Some stories spoke of their incredible bravery in single-handedly killing the enemy – Nguyen Thi Xuan.
  3. As casualties in the war increased in the 1960s, women were urged to join the struggle in larger numbers.
  4. Many women responded and joined the resistance movement. They helped in nursing the wounded, constructing underground rooms and tunnels and fighting the enemy.
  5. They built six airstrips, neutralized tens of thousands of bombs transported tens of thousands of kilograms of cargo.

Women in Times of Peace

The image of the warrior woman was replaced with the image of worker woman, in the 1970s, when the end of the war was near.
