Explain why iron is a transition element but sodium is not?
Iron is transition element but sodium is not because of the differentiating electron i.e. last incoming electron in iron acquires 3d orbitals to give [Ar] 3d6, 4s2 configuration with incomplete d-sub-shell, the characteristic of transition. In Na, the differentiating electron occupies 3s1 subshell to give [Ne] 3s1 configuration.
