479. If two isosceles triangles have a common base, the line joining their vertices bisects the common base at right angles. Prove.

In ∆ABD and ∆ACD,
AB = AC    | Given
BD = CD    I Given
AD = AD    | Common
∴ ABD ≅ ∆ACD    | SSS Axiom
∴ ∠1 = ∠2    | C.P.C.T.
In ∆ABE and ∆ACE,
AB = AC    | Given
AE = AE    | Common
∠1 = ∠2 | Proved above

In ∆ABD and ∆ACD,AB = AC    | GivenBD = CD    I GivenAD = A

∴ ∆ABE ≅ ∆ACE    | SAS Axiom
∴ BE = CE    | C.P.C.T.
and    ∠3 = ∠4    | C.P.C.T.
But, ∠3 + ∠4 = 180° | Linear Pair Axiom
∴ ∠3 = ∠4 = 90°
⇒ AD bisects BC at right angles.
