The diameters of the lower and upper ends of a bucket in the form of a frustum f a cone are 10 cm and 30 cm respectively. If its height is 24 cm, find:

(i) The area of the metal sheet used to make the bucket.
(ii) Why should we avoid the bucket made by ordinary plastic? [ Use π =3.14 ]

Let r1 = 5 cm and r2 = 15cm are radii of lower and upper circular faces.

= π (r₁ + r₂) l + πr1² ... (i)

From diagram
AB = CD = 5 cm
DE = 15 – 5 = 10 cm
and BD = 24 cm

∴ BE2 = BD2 + DE2

= 576 + 100

BE2 = 676

BE = 26 cm = l

Metal required

= π(5 + 15) 26 + π (5)²
= π x 20 x 26 + π x 25
= 5π (4 x 26+ 5)
= 5π (109)
= 5 x 22/7 x 109
= 1712.85 cm²

There is a chance of breakdown due to stress of an ordinary plastic.
