Rs. 7500 were divided equally among a certain number of children. Had there been 20 less children, each would have received Rs. 100 more. Find the original number of children.

Let the original number of children be  x.

It is given that  Rs. 7500  is divided among  x  children.

 Money received by each child =  Rs.  7500xIf there were  20  less children, then money received by each child = Rs.  7500x - 20

From the given information, we have

7500x - 20 - 7500x  = 100 75x - 20 - 75x  = 175 x - 75  x - 20  x - 20  x75 x - 75 x + 1500x2 - 20 x 1500 = x2 - 20 x x2 - 20 x - 1500 = 0

 x2 - 50 x + 30 x - 1500 = 0 x  x - 50  + 30  x - 50  = 0  x - 50   x + 30  = 0 x = 50     or      x = - 30

Since number of children cannot be negative, we reject  x = - 30.

 x = 50

Thus, the original number of children = 50.
