A peacock perched on the top of a 12 m high tree spots a snake moving towards its hole at the base of the tree from a distance equal to thrice the height of the tree. The peacock flies towards the snake in straight line and they both move at the same speed. At what distance from the base of the tree will the peacock catch the snake?
16 m
18 m
14 m
12m

16 m
The12 m high tree is the vertical side of a right triangle with its base 36 m. As the peacock and the snake moves at the same speed and in straight lines, they meet at a point on the base after travelling equal distances. The following triangle depicts the scenario.
Let the distance travelled be x metre. So AD = x and in right ABD,
AB2 + BD2 = AD2
or, 122 + (36 – x)2 = x2
or, 122 + 362 – 72x + x2 = x2
On cancelling 12 we get,
12 + 3 × 36 – 6x = 0
6x = 120
x = 20
Therefore, BD = 16m
