7.

Explain why :

A large percentage of carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid within the RBCs whereas very little carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid in the plasma.

When carbon dioxide diffuses into the blood plasma and then into the red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the presence of the catalyst carbonic anhydrase most CO2 reacts with water in the erythrocytes. Since the RBCs contain sufficient amount of carbonic anhydrase enzyme, which catalyses the reaction between carbon dioxide and water and helps in transport of carbon dioxide from tissues to the lungs. However, the plasma does not have the  enzyme and thus no carbonic acid formation takes place there.
