    15. Schematically represent the temperature-composition curve for the vapour in equilibrium with an ideal mixture of two completely miscible liquids of different boiling points. Explain with the aid of this diagram how fractional distillation is done.



    A and B are two completely miscible liquids of different vapour pressure. The graph shows that vapour composition curve lies below the solution curve. The vapour is always rich in the more volatile component. At a particular vapour pressure indicated by point X, the composition of the solution is given by point Y and that of vapour is given by point Z. The vapours contain a higher amount of liquid B which is more volatile as compared to liquid A which is less volatile. On this basis, fractional distillation of liquid A and liquid B is carried out.
