Explain the following :

The hydride of sulphur is a gas but the hydride of oxygen is a liquid.

Hydride of oxygen is water and hydride of sulphur are H2S. The water molecules are capable of forming hydrogen bonds due to the presence of hydrogen attached to oxygen. On the other hand, molecules of H2S are held together by Vander- Waal’s forces. Since hydrogen bonding is a stronger force as compared to Vander-Waal’s forces, the molecules of water come closer and exist in form of liquid. Whereas molecules of H2S are far apart from each other and it exists in form of gas.
