How can the following conversation be brought about:
i) Acetaldehyde to acetaldehyde phenyl hydrazine.
ii) Benzoic acid to aniline.
iii) Methyl chloride to acetone.
iv) Benzene to benzene diazonium chloride.
i) Glycerol (propane 1,2,3 triol) is more viscous than ethylene glycol ( ethane 1,2, diol). Explain.
ii) How can urea be detected by Biuret test?
i) Glycerol (1,2,3-trihydroxypropane)has three -OH groups per molecules and ethylene glycol( 1,2 dihydroxy ethane has two OH groups whilst ethanol only has a one-OH group.
The viscosity depends on the amount of hydrogen bonding between molecules, and the more -OH bonds there is more hydrogen bonding can occur. So glycerol is the most viscous.
ii) The biuret test is a chemical test used for detecting the presence of peptide bonds. In the presence of peptides, a copper(II) ion forms violet-colored coordination complexes in an alkaline solution.
Since the urea has peptide bond thus it also gives positive biuret test.
