Verify Lagrange's Mean value theorem for the function f(x) = x2 - x in the interval [1, 4].


Given,

f(x) = x2 - x, x  1, 4

(i) f(x) is continuous in [1, 4]

(ii) f(x) is differentiable in (1, 4)

 f'(x)= 12x2 - x × 2x - 1

f4 = 16 - 4 = 12

f1 = 1 - 1 = 0

Therefore, all the conditions of Lagrange's Mean value theorem are satidfied.

 f'(c) = f(b) - f(a)b - a

 2c - 124(c2 - c) = 12 - 04 - 1 = 123

Squaring both sides,

2c - 124(c2 - c) = 129 = 43

 3(4c2 - 4c + 1) = 16c2 - c

 12c2 - 12c + 3 = 16c2 - 16c

 4c2 - 4c - 3 = 0

 (2c + 1)2c - 3 = 0

c = - 12 or c = 32

Clearly c = 3/2 lies between 1 and 4.

 Lagrange's Mean Value theorem is verified.
