To a beaker containing copper sulphate in water, iron nails were added. Soon the peacock blue colour of the solution changed to light green. Explain the reaction taking place.

Copper sulphate in water gave peacock blue colour. On adding iron nails, iron replaces copper from copper sulphate producing light green ferrous sulphate and a shiny coat of copper metal. This reaction occur because of the reactivity of iron is more than the reactivity of copper.
This reaction known as a displacement reaction and is represented as:

Fe(s) + CuSO4(ag)→FeSO4(ag) + Cu(s)
