Ms Sappleton's husband and her two brothers had gone for shooting through the open French window three years ago. It had rained heavily that summer. Many places that had been safe in previous years become treacherously boggy. In the crossing the moor to their favourite shooting spot, they were all engulfed in a piece of bog. Their bodies could not be recovered.

Mrs Sappleton told Framton that her husband and her brothers had gone for shooting water birds in the marshes. They were expected to return soon. They always came in through the window. So she had kept it open for them.
